Dental crown in Anaheim

Serving patients in Anaheim and surrounding areas in Orange County

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed on damaged teeth to hide imperfections and improve its function. Dr. Kim will recommend a dental crown for the following situations:

  • Recent root canal therapy
  • Worn-down or weakened teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Dental implants
  • Large fillings on smaller teeth
  • Other cosmetic cases (discolored, misshapen teeth)

Dr. Kim will first give you a thorough oral exam before suggesting the type and material for the dental crown.

High-quality Zirconia and PFM dental crowns at First Dental Care

At First Dental Care, we use zirconia and PFM (porcelain fused to metal) to craft beautiful dental crowns. We use only the best materials to ensure a natural look with the added benefits of durability. While we don’t make our crowns in-house, we work with a highly regarded dental lab. Their expert technicians make sure your dental crowns fit like a glove and last many years.

What are the types of dental crowns?

Depending on your case, there are several dental crown options for you. The more popular ones include the following:

  • Metal. While metal dental crowns are the least aesthetic, they are one of the most durable types.
  • Stainless steel. This type is commonly used on children for their primary teeth.
  • Porcelain. This is the most natural-looking type of dental crown that also works for those with metal allergies.
  • Resin. This is commonly used for temporary dental crowns and don’t last very long.
  • Zirconia. A relatively new material, zirconia provides the durability of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain.
  • Lithium disilicate. Also known as E-Max, this type of dental crown easily matches your natural tooth color and is quite durable.

*Although there are many types of dental crowns, we only offer zirconia and PFM (porcelain fused to metal) at First Dental Care.

Is it cheaper to pull a tooth or get a crown?

As long as your tooth is predominantly healthy, it’s better to keep your natural teeth in place. Getting a dental crown is more affordable than pulling out your tooth. It is also less invasive, which means a much faster recovery.

How long does a dental crown last?

A porcelain dental crown can last up to 15 years, but needs proper maintenance. Aside from the usual practice of good oral hygiene, you’ll have to avoid certain food. Frequent consumption of nuts and candy can easily wear down your dental crowns.

Is a dental crown procedure painful?

No, a dental crown procedure should not be painful. Dr. Kim uses a local anesthetic to make sure you are comfortable while he reshapes the tooth for the cap or when he needs to repair any damage.

How long does a dental crown procedure take?

It takes at least 2 dental visits to complete a dental crown procedure. Your first visit will take between 2-4 hours and include the following:

  • Preliminary check-up (X-ray and manual inspection)
  • Any repairs that need to be done (fillings, root canal)
  • Reshaping and taking dental impressions
  • Applying the temporary crown

You will need to wait a few weeks before your permanent crown is ready. During your second visit, Dr. Kim will remove the temporary crown, and fit the permanent crown. He will ensure everything fits perfectly and make final adjustments before securing the dental crowns in place. The second visit usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour.
